Scales of Agriculture
How does agriculture work at each level? How does the agriculture relate to the physical features of the community – its built form and public realm?
Large Farms
Large scale farms are adjacent to neighbourhoods, but with a less dense pattern as the green residential finger opens up into the larger agricultural fields. They are managed independently, but part of an agricultural preserve. This land is cultivated for larger volumes of food to provide for the wider region and are located on the edges of the settlement, but remain very near dense residential neighbourhood and the centrally-located Market Square.
12-Acre Farms
These mid-scale farm plots are another form of significant agricultural production. Situated between one acre and the larger farm area, these farm units provide opportunity for independent professional farm operators to lease a small farm unit from the agricultural trust. Though operating independently they remain very well connected to the urban residential and Market Square core.
One-Acre Farms
As the main interface between agriculture and urban, these one acre farms (also called Specialty Farms) will be the integration point for the smallest scale of farming. Residences and farm structures will be clustered at the edge of the community, while farmland besets the remaining three sides, eventually opening up into the larger agricultural land. One acre farms will provide residents with the opportunity to farm part-time producing food for the larger community on a market garden scale.
Small Neighbourhood Greens
These greens are intended to democratize agricultural opportunity for any resident wishing to garden or farm. These plots vary in size depending on their location and proximity to density. Larger greens are located on the interior of several surrounding multi-family housing units, while smaller greens are contained within interior blocks and residential courtyards. These areas are not included in the measurement of total agricultural land but are examples of the range of opportunity for citizens, including growing for pleasure.
