Environmental Impact

Century Group's working plan for Southlands includes a range of initiatives that will significantly affect the quality of life in our community. As with any change to status quo, there is usually a direct impact on the local community environment.

Much of this impact was addressed in Century Group's 2009 application to the Corporation of Delta for an Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment. Impact is also addressed in public meetings, and we encourage Tsawwassen residents to participate at all meetings.

Southlands will offer unique, exciting possibilities in terms of building a more sustainable, integrated infrastructure - largely because of its diversity of land use: compact residential and commercial areas (urban) adjacent to agricultural and habitat areas.

This diversity is designed to support high sustainability performance, for example in energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and resource recycling and recovery. The end result - achievement of 'eco-efficiencies' - will add lasting value to all of Tsawwassen.

Green property management

Salmon-Safe is a US-based nonprofit devoted to restoring agricultural and urban watersheds. It is a land-based certification program for any property that impacts watershed ecosystems. The program defines best practice for land management and habitat and water stewardship.

Once certified, an ecolabel is awarded to recognize and promote all land managers – including farmers, municipalities, and urban campuses – that are committed to maintaining a set of environmental standards for an entire property.

Southlands is one of three mixed-use pilots under consideration, which will help build a strong Canadian program to launch the Salmon-Safe standard in British Columbia.

Before designers started drawing plans for Southlands, a number of important issues were explored with the input of expert consultants, including wildlife and habitat, drainage and water management, agricultural land capability and other issues.
